Let’s see- where to begin. Though my current location is somewhere in the middle of nowhere, I grew up in California. San Diego to be exact. Ten minutes from the Mexican border and 3 hours south of the city of angels: Los Angeles. Both which are important since Mexico is my motherland and LA was where my primas [aka my Mexican cousins] lived.
Growing up there were three Clark girls and four Isomaki girls– and then there was Derek. Despite the distance, we were inseparable. We formed a club, the name was genius: The Cuzins Club. Yes, that’s right Cuzins with a Z. Each of us had roles. Kim, my older lawyer sister, was of course the President of the club. Joey, was Vice President. Alyssa was Treasurer… and so on. We were official. We had customized rings that we got made in Tijuana and secret knocks to enter rooms. We’d hold secret meetings and send letters back and forth from San Diego to LA with the duties that we were to carry out before the next meeting.
Now, with all of us in our twenties and kidlets running around, not much has changed. We may not have secret meetings anymore or send coded letters back and forth but we still correspond with duties. As technology upgraded, so did we. We’ve advanced to e-mails.
This summer the Cuzins are taking the club to a whole new level- We’re becoming a Marathon Team. Kim and Erin [Sidenote: Erin was named after me– although she’ll deny it every time] are running a marathon in LA and then in San Diego. And if that wasn’t enough, they are running a 95 mile relay down Interstate 5 from Huntington Beach to San Diego.
Being the club member who does design, I was tasked out to design the new Cuzins Club T-shirt for the upcoming races. After several designs and voting via e-mail we came up with this:
The words of Erin are my favorite: “It has that whole Greek + Olympic feel. And I think we’re going to go down in history as great, if not greater than the first Olympic athletes. But maybe that’s just me…”
While, I’m not sure about being greater than the first Olympic athletes, I am sure that the Cuzins Club will go down in history as great. Keep your eye out for the Cuzins Club. I’m sure they’ll make the news as they run down Interstate 5 this summer.
Oh to be a member of the Cuzins Club.
We glide. We run. We Race.
