A Reminder for Self

Saturday afternoon I went on a little afternoon outing with my pops. After our coffee date I convinced him that we ought to stop by one of my favorite places: the bookstore. Without much thought, I headed straight to the “Self-Help” section of the store where I always find a treasure. This day was no exception. After browsing the shelves for something that stuck out, I found a little black book entitled “Steal Like An Artist” by Austin Kleon.¬†As I was flipping through the black and white pages I was certain that this book had to become a part of my personal library.

Whether you are an artist, a student, a business person, or a stay at home parent– do yourself a favor and go buy this book. It’s a book about creativity that will inspire and challenge you to take life to the next level.

In his book, Kleon writes: “Take time to mess around. Get Lost. Wander. You never know where it might lead you.” I fell in love with this quote. It’s something that I need to remind myself of every now and then. I am a lover of creativity and thrive off it, however, at the same time I am the queen of to-do-lists. It’s easy to get caught up crossing things off the lists. Every couple of months I get in this place I like to call “The Funk”, where I feel completely uninspired and drained from work. When I take time to actually look up from my little computer screen and little black book of to-do-lists I realize that I’ve given myself no room to be inspired because I’ve been working to cross things off list and not allowing myself to get lost and explore. It’s all about balance. Structure is good and it’s needed to get things accomplished. However, I’m noticing that if I wanna stay out of getting in “funks” then I better be taking time to get lost along the way of my structured schedule.

I’ve always been taught to write things down and put them where you can see them to remind you of things. So, I decided that this quote ought to be no exception. I created a little poster to hang in my room to remind myself to allow exploring to become a priority in life.

So here it is.

Let it serve as a challenge to you as well.

Roman Holiday: Kansas City

Roman Holiday.

As a child I grew up on black and white films. Mickey Rooney, Jimmy Steward, Katherine Hepburn, Clark Gable, and Doris Day were all my favorites movie stars. I absolutely loved the comedy, the romance, and the stories. Out of all the stars of that era though, my absolute favorite was of course Audrey Hepburn. I suppose one could say she is a role model.

Summer Twenty Ten I was spending a couple weeks at the Shenandoah Estate (my home in San Diego) and of course made sure I had time to catch up on some of my Audrey films. I remember it like it was yesterday, I was watching “Roman Holiday” and was completely inspired by Audrey’s role. In the film Audrey plays a princess whose time is managed by every but her. One night she comes to the conclusion that she will not allow for this to happen any longer. In the middle of the night Audrey sneaks out of the palace and wanders around a new city. Over the course of the next 24 hours Audrey goes on an adventure of a lifetime as she meets a stranger and tries things she’s done before. She throws caution to the wind and leaves the responsibilities of the day behind.

Naturally, I decided that I too ought to have Roman Holidays. So, every year I take random trips and adventure in a new city.

This April to celebrate my twenty-fifth birthday I took off on my Roman Holiday and went to the beautiful Kansas City.

Here’s a peek of my Holiday.

We arrived in the city at the perfect time. Like Audrey, my girls and I adventured into the heart of the city. We found the Power and Lights district with the most amazing Piano Bars. Of course, being a lover of all things music I was in LOVE.

The next morning we dined at McCoy’s a lovely little restaurant right outside of the Plaza.

We were told by the locals to try the best coffee in town from the Broadway Cafe. After strolling around for awhile we finally found it. The locals told no lies when they said it was the best coffee.

And of course we stopped for a mini photoshoot…

It’s impossible to take a road trip to Kansas City with out taking a drive down the Plaza and stopping at some of the best shops! Hello Hello H&M, Anthro, and Urban!!

So there it is. My Roman Holiday. My challenge to you– is to take a break from the day to day. Go on an adventure, try something new, take time to be inspired. We have our wholes lives to work and let our time be managed by other people… so make sure to take some time for yourself and ENJOY your life.
