Current Obsession: Handwritten Everything!

Growing up my mom was seriously all about education. I’m pretty sure, okay, well I’m 100% positive that it’s because of her background. She grew up in a small town outside of Mazatlan, Mexico and unfortunately didn’t have the luxury of attending extra classes and lessons.  Needless to say, my mother was determined that her three girls would have access to everything she didn’t. That included piano lessons, dance lessons, and yes… even calligraphy lessons! That’s right! Every summer, while all the other kids were at camp or whatever it is kids do in the summer… I’d be sitting in “College for Kids” at the local junior college working on my penmanship.

I suppose the hours and hours of getting my handwriting professionally critiqued at the age of 9 instilled a love for penmanship. Which would explain my current obsession with handwritten designs. From invitations, to logos, to displays and magazine covers– I’m loving the fact that people are using their unique handwriting! After all, that’s how everything started right?

After seeing these– maybe handwriting will be your new obsession too!

You have to agree- this is an amazing window display! It’s eye catching, right?

via Lindsay Letters

Okay, if you are in need of invites or anything calligraphic– look at Lindsay’s website! She’s brilliant.

I often ask myself– why I can’t have this penmanship! Seriously. After seeing this image I sent it to my dear Megan  a fellow lover of creativity and together we questioned why the good Lord didn’t grace us with this skill.

I’m pretty sure Austin Kleon’s handwriting is perfection. I’m in love and wishing that my penmanship was this precise. I’m told that my handwriting looks more like Arabic. Minor details.

This is a magazine cover. Yes and Yes! I definitely would pick it up and read it just because of this cover!

Honestly, I love this quote! Such a good reminder to use our hands. There are so many beautiful font choices out there these days- I have a full list of my favorites, but let’s try using our hands- shall we? And create something uniquely beautiful.

And These are the Moments I Love

Do you ever see photos and wish that you could just be in that moment? I grew up on Anne of Green Gables which instilled this dreamer part of me. Lately, I’ve seen so many beautiful photographs that I wish I could just jump in for a moment in time.

These are some of my favorites.

I see my path, but I don’t know where it leads. Not knowing where I’m going is what inspires me to travel it.

We should come home from adventures, and perils, and discoveries everyday with new experiences and character.

Diana Barry: I wish I were rich, and I could spend the whole summer at a hotel, eating ice cream and chicken salad.
Anne Shirley: You know something, Diana? We are rich. We have sixteen years to our credit, and we both have wonderful imaginations. We should be as happy as queens.
[gestures to the setting sun]
Anne Shirley: Look at that. You couldn’t enjoy its loveliness more if you had ropes of diamonds.

Perhaps, after all, romance did not come into one’s life with pomp and blare, like a gay knight riding down; perhaps it crept to one’s side like an old friend through quiet ways; perhaps it revealed itself in seeming prose, until some sudden shaft of illumination flung athwart its pages betrayed the rhythm and the music; perhaps . . . perhaps . . . love unfolded naturally out of a beautiful friendship, as a golden-hearted rose slipping from its green sheath.

A Place for The Books

Last week, I went to my secret place and purchased an old door. I had no exact plans for the door and to be honest, no place for it. I was in the mood to get crafty and use my hands and I figured that I’d find a solution for the lack of extra space later on. As I was driving home I was thinking about all the furniture that was already delicately placed in my room. The thought came to me that if I wanted this door to be a part of my room’s decor, it had to serve a purpose as well. Seconds later, I knew what my new door was going to be transformed into: a bookshelf! You see, although technology is rapidly moving forward and allowing people to read books on Kindles and Tablets I may be one of the few people who have not joined this movement. There’s something special about going to the bookstore and picking up a fresh book, feeling the pages, and writing thoughts and doodling within the pages. With that said, I have more books than I have space for. A bookshelf was most definitely needed.

So in the spirit of making my lovely door bookshelf – I found some lovely bookshelves that would be perfect for a home.

Ready to see some bookshelf inspiration?

This may be the most amazing library I’ve ever seen. What I would do to have a room in my house like this. Absolutely brilliant in everyday.

I love this concept as well. Transforming a whole wall into shelves and topping it off with a ladder!

I adore this room. The bookshelf is wonderful, but I think I mostly love it because of the grand piano.

Gosh. I can see this in a kid’s room! So brilliant!

Can you imagine this being in your house? To die for! It reminds me of My Fair Lady with Audrey Hepburn.

Well, that’s it for now! I’ll be sure to show you the finished product of my door!

But for now, here’s your only sneak peek.

Do you have any favorite book shelf styles?

A Reminder for Self

Saturday afternoon I went on a little afternoon outing with my pops. After our coffee date I convinced him that we ought to stop by one of my favorite places: the bookstore. Without much thought, I headed straight to the “Self-Help” section of the store where I always find a treasure. This day was no exception. After browsing the shelves for something that stuck out, I found a little black book entitled “Steal Like An Artist” by Austin Kleon. As I was flipping through the black and white pages I was certain that this book had to become a part of my personal library.

Whether you are an artist, a student, a business person, or a stay at home parent– do yourself a favor and go buy this book. It’s a book about creativity that will inspire and challenge you to take life to the next level.

In his book, Kleon writes: “Take time to mess around. Get Lost. Wander. You never know where it might lead you.” I fell in love with this quote. It’s something that I need to remind myself of every now and then. I am a lover of creativity and thrive off it, however, at the same time I am the queen of to-do-lists. It’s easy to get caught up crossing things off the lists. Every couple of months I get in this place I like to call “The Funk”, where I feel completely uninspired and drained from work. When I take time to actually look up from my little computer screen and little black book of to-do-lists I realize that I’ve given myself no room to be inspired because I’ve been working to cross things off list and not allowing myself to get lost and explore. It’s all about balance. Structure is good and it’s needed to get things accomplished. However, I’m noticing that if I wanna stay out of getting in “funks” then I better be taking time to get lost along the way of my structured schedule.

I’ve always been taught to write things down and put them where you can see them to remind you of things. So, I decided that this quote ought to be no exception. I created a little poster to hang in my room to remind myself to allow exploring to become a priority in life.

So here it is.

Let it serve as a challenge to you as well.

The Wedding

June 23rd was a big day for the Clark Family.

The baby of the family, little Ashley, made the bold move of being the first Clark girl to leave the comfort of the Shenandoah Estate to wed the love of her life.

Honestly, it was an act of bravery. Growing up in the Clark house talking to boys was practically unheard of. In Junior High it was considered scandalous to be talking to be boys on AIM after school.  Ashley though, she was always the brave one of the family when it came to pushing the boundaries and talking to my parents about “sensitive” subjects including boys. I mean, we’re talking about the little one who at the age of 13 thought it was perfectly acceptable to take Old Faithful, the family station wagon, out for a joyride with her friend to the local grocery store just to get some dessert.

Time went by and Ashley only got more daring. While I was in college hiding the fact that I was going on study dates with my guy friends, Ashley was back at home confessing her little crushes to my parents. My thoughts: How RACY!

I can remember the very first time I saw Ashley and Micah together. I passed them in the college parking lot. We stopped our cars for a sisterly hello– when I noticed that Ashley was not in the driver’s seat but instead a country boy. I asked Ashley who the boy was, hoping for dear life that that he wasn’t following the conversation we were having in Sign Language. Ashley casually responded, “This is Micah, I’m dating him!”  I was blown away! My first thought was: “Is she even old enough to date?!” After all, Ashley was the baby of the family. Apparently, my parents thought it was perfect acceptable because before I knew it Ashley and Micah were celebrating their 1 year anniversary. The months passed by and as I saw Ashley and Micah interact I realized that this was a true love story.

Boy sees girl.
Boy musters up courage for the first hello.
Boy learns a new language for girl.
Boy falls head over heels.
Boy and girl fall in love.

Christmas rolled around and I was home for the Holidays– my mom randomly popped in my room as she tends to do and started talking to me about life. The conversation took it’s course and gracefully my mother weaved into the conversation that Micah had asked for Ashley’s hand in marriage. I was speechless. Ashley was the baby of the family and I was beginning to think that every one forgot about that little memo! The only words that I could muster up were: “Is she even old enough to get married?”

Well, apparently the parentals thought was. According to my father there comes a time when even the baby’s have to leave the nest. It just so happened that the baby of the family was the first one to leave Shenandoah Drive.

The months rolled by and June 23rd came. I watched my baby sister slip into her wedding dress and teared up. She was pure beauty. Somewhere along the road, my little baby became all grown up. As I watched my dad walk Ashley down the aisle I teared up.  When Ashley and Micah exchanged vows, well that was perhaps the most beautiful moment I’ve witnessed. Ashley had worked hard and practiced her vows over and over to perfect her speech for the wedding– and Micah did the same with his sign language. Their love had crossed the boundaries of language.

My family wanted to show a little of Micah and Ashley’s story at the reception, so naturally I was tasked out to be in charge of this little project.

So I present to you – their story!

Monday’s Tradition

The story goes like this: Several months ago my dear friend Christa and I started exchanging picture texts of things that we liked and inspired us. A couple hundred picture texts later, we came to the conclusion to make it a Monday Tradition. Without fail, every Monday starting around 7:27 am there is a constant exchange of photos of things that intrigue us, inspire us, motivate us, or things we want to try.

Naturally, I thought to myself that I ought to be sharing some of our finds with you…

So here it goes… A couple days after Monday, but I’m sure you’ll forgive me.

Enjoy this past week’s “best”!

The Lace Gift

Well, wedding season is back again. This past weekend my roommate from the third story apartment had a bridal shower. For those of you who have not yet entered the world of reading gift registries- let me tell you… it’s a mental workout! After a good 37 minutes of wandering the store looking for aisle C82 and an obscure item number- I finally had my gifts and was ready for checkout. Proud of myself for feeling as if I conquered the registry I mindlessly swiped my credit card and within seconds realized I has forgotten to purchase gift bags! Shame on me! Right? With no time to spare, I headed back to the third story apartment and found my secret stash of fabric! A little teale covered with lace and violá! The spare fabric had found its new purpose: my wrapping. So next time you are out and about and forget gift bags just think about what materials you have stored away in your house that will work as a unique wrapping.
